Mahapurush Sri Sri Madhabdev, while at Behar, appointed Mathuraads as the Satradhikar (Head of the Satra) and entrusted him with the responsibility of managing and conducting religious discourses at the Satra. Sri Sri Mathuradas, also known as Sri Sri Mathuradas Burha Aata or Bura Aata, served as the first and only Satradhikar of Barpeta Satra from 1597 to 1641 AD.
Following this precedent, the tradition of selecting the Satriyas continued, with members of the 'Samuha' (Community of devotees) participating in a democratic process to choose the leaders. This practice led to the emergence of two distinct roles within the Satra hierarchy: the 'Burha Satriya' (Head of the Satra) and the 'Deka Satriya' (Assistant Satriya).
Burha Satriya: The Burha Satriya serves as the head priest of the Satra. They oversee the management of the Satra and lead religious activities. Additionally, the Burha Satriya holds the position of president of the managing committee of Barpeta Satra.
Deka Satriya: The Deka Satriya acts as the assistant head priest and supports the Burha Satriya in their duties. In the absence of the Burha Satriya, the Deka Satriya assumes their responsibilities. The Deka Satriya also serves as the vice president of the managing committee of Barpeta Satra.
Both the Burha Satriya and the Deka Satriya are expected to lead lives characterized by simplicity, regularity, and continence, regardless of marital status. It's important to note that traditionally, candidates for either position are selected from the Mahapurusiya cult, irrespective of family or caste affiliations.
